April 9th, 2008 meeting.
This month we discussed Still Life by Louise Penny.
The vote was approximately 80% thumbs up for the books. It is the first in a series featuring a charming village in Canada, near Montreal. Some of the comments from people who enjoyed the book were as follows: “charming characters”; “I would like to visit this wonderful little village”; “fantastic in the use of art and poetry.” Many readers expressed a wish that the paintings upon which the novel evolves had been depicted in the book.
One comment from people that found problems with the book was:“too many changes of viewpoint, I was often unsure who was speaking and where the action had moved to.” Some people found the scenes in the finale "hokey and contrived.” There was also concern about this series, due to its setting, developing “Cabot Cove syndrome” too many deaths in a small town.
If you have read this book and you would like to make comments on your impressions, e-mail highcrimes@earthlink.net and I will post them on this page.
